How to continue a ChatGPT chat in Gemini

Updated November 1, 2026All guides →

Carry a ChatGPT conversation into Google Gemini without retyping the background: a free manual method and a one-click way with AIPorter.

Maybe you want a second opinion, a different style of answer, or you simply ran out of messages in ChatGPT. Gemini can pick up where you left off if you give it the history. Here is how.

Method 1: paste the conversation

  1. In ChatGPT, select the conversation from the first message to the last and copy it.
  2. Open gemini.google.com and start a new chat. You may be asked to sign in with a Google account.
  3. Paste the conversation, then add one line: "This is our earlier conversation. Please continue from the last message."

Tip for long chats: every assistant has a limit on how much one message can hold, so a very long paste may be cut. Ask ChatGPT first: "Write a hand-off summary of this conversation for another AI assistant: goal, decisions, key facts, open questions, next step. Under 400 words." Paste that summary into Gemini instead. For anything important, also save the full chat (see exporting a ChatGPT conversation to Markdown).

Method 2: one click with AIPorter

  1. Open the ChatGPT conversation.
  2. Click the AIPorter icon and stay on the Export tab.
  3. Under Continue in another AI, choose Gemini.

AIPorter reads the conversation, opens Gemini in a new tab and puts the whole conversation into its message box. You read it, add your next question and press send. If the site blocks the automatic paste, AIPorter shows a "Paste conversation" button and the chat is on your clipboard too. The move happens in your browser and the conversation is not uploaded to AIPorter.

What to check afterwards

  • Scroll the pasted text once. If something was cut, resend the missing part or use the summary method.
  • Say what you want next, clearly. See seven prompt fixes with before and after.
  • Moving works in every direction between ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini.
