How to move a ChatGPT conversation to Claude

Updated November 1, 2026All guides →

Two ways to carry a ChatGPT chat into Claude without starting over: copy and paste, or one click with AIPorter. Steps, tips and what to watch for.

You are halfway through a useful ChatGPT conversation, and you want Claude's view on it, or you hit a limit and need to keep going somewhere else. Starting over means retyping the background. Here is how to carry the chat across.

Method 1: copy and paste (free, no tools)

  1. Open the ChatGPT conversation and scroll to the top.
  2. Select the whole thread and copy it (Ctrl+A, Ctrl+C on the page often copies more than you want, so select from the first message to the last by hand).
  3. Open a new chat in Claude and paste it into the message box.
  4. Add one line telling Claude what you want next, for example: "This is our earlier conversation. Continue from the last message."

What goes wrong: formatting can break, code blocks and tables get messy, and a very long chat may be longer than Claude accepts in one message. The next method helps with the last problem.

A better way to carry a long chat: ask for a hand-off summary

Before you leave ChatGPT, send this message:

Write a hand-off summary of this conversation for another AI assistant. Include the goal, decisions made, key facts and numbers, open questions, and the next step. Keep it under 400 words.

Paste that summary into Claude instead of the whole chat. You lose some detail and gain a clean start. For important work, keep both: the summary to continue, and the full chat saved (see the guide on exporting a ChatGPT conversation to Markdown).

Method 2: one click with AIPorter

  1. Install AIPorter from the Chrome Web Store.
  2. Open the ChatGPT conversation you want to move.
  3. Click the AIPorter icon in the toolbar and stay on the Export tab.
  4. Under Continue in another AI, choose Claude.

AIPorter reads the conversation on the page, opens Claude in a new tab and puts the whole conversation into its message box. You read it over and press send. If a site blocks the automatic paste, AIPorter shows a "Paste conversation" button, and the chat is also on your clipboard.

The move happens in your browser. The conversation is not uploaded to AIPorter's servers.

Things to know

  • Very long chats: each AI limits how much text one message can hold, so Claude may cut off part of a very long conversation. Export to Markdown first as a backup.
  • Read before you send: check that the pasted text looks right and add your next question at the end.
  • The other direction works too: the same steps move a chat from Claude to ChatGPT or Gemini.
  • Different AIs answer differently. That is the point of moving a chat: a second opinion on the same context.

Try it

AIPorter is a free Chrome extension for ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini. It is independent and not made by OpenAI, Anthropic or Google.
