ChatGPT says you've reached your limit: what to do

Updated November 1, 2026All guides →

ChatGPT stopped you mid-chat? Here is what to do right now: read the reset time, save your chat, continue in another AI, and avoid it next time.

You are in the middle of something important and ChatGPT says you have reached your limit. The conversation is still there. Here is a calm way to deal with it.

1. Read the message

The notice usually says when you can use that model again. The exact limits depend on your plan and change over time, so check the message and your plan page, not an old article, for the numbers.

2. Save the conversation first

Before you do anything else, keep a copy so the work cannot be lost:

  • Select the thread and paste it into a notes app, or
  • use AIPorter's Copy as Markdown or Save as .md file on the Export tab to keep a clean copy in one click. More in the guide on exporting a ChatGPT conversation.

3. Pick how to continue

  • Wait for the reset if the task is not urgent.
  • Continue in another assistant. Claude and Gemini both have free options. Move the conversation across so you do not retype the background. See how to move a ChatGPT conversation to Claude. With AIPorter it is the Export tab, then Continue in another AI.
  • Upgrade your ChatGPT plan if you hit the limit often and rely on it for work.

4. Make limits hurt less next time

  • One topic per chat. Long mixed chats use up your allowance faster and confuse the answers.
  • Write the prompt well the first time. A clear prompt means fewer back-and-forth messages. See seven prompt fixes, with before and after.
  • Keep a short running summary of long projects, so you can start fresh in any assistant in a minute.
