How to export a ChatGPT conversation to Markdown

Updated November 1, 2026All guides →

Three ways to save a ChatGPT chat as clean, reusable text: ChatGPT's own data export, copy and paste, and one-click Markdown with AIPorter.

A good AI conversation is worth keeping: a plan, a piece of code, a set of decisions. Markdown is plain text with simple formatting, so it opens everywhere and pastes cleanly into notes apps such as Notion or Obsidian.

Option 1: ChatGPT's own data export

ChatGPT lets you download your whole history. The menu names change from time to time, but it is in your settings under data controls: choose export data, and you receive a download link by email. It contains all your chats at once, not one, and in a format meant for machines, so it is a good backup but not a quick way to save one conversation.

Option 2: copy and paste

Select the part of the chat you want, copy it, and paste it into a note. It works, but headings, lists and code blocks often lose their formatting, and you repeat it for every chat.

Option 3: one click with AIPorter

  1. Open the conversation in ChatGPT.
  2. Click the AIPorter icon and open the Export tab.
  3. Choose Copy as Markdown to paste into any app, or Save as .md file to download the full transcript.

The same works on Claude and Gemini. Exports happen in your browser: the conversation is not uploaded to AIPorter. Signed-out visitors get 1 export a day and a free account gets 2; Pro has unlimited exports.

What to do with the file

  • Drop it into your notes app, or a folder per project.
  • Use it as context: paste it at the start of a new chat so the AI knows the history. For a long file, ask for a short summary first.
  • Keep it as a backup before you move the chat to another assistant (see moving a conversation to Claude).

Try it

AIPorter is a free Chrome extension for ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini. It is independent and not made by OpenAI, Anthropic or Google.
