How to save and export a Claude conversation

Updated November 1, 2026All guides →

Keep a Claude chat as clean Markdown: copy it, save it as a file, or move it to another assistant. Steps for the manual way and for AIPorter.

Claude is good for long writing, analysis and coding sessions, and those are exactly the chats you want to keep. Here are the ways to save one.

Option 1: your account data export

Claude lets you request a download of your account data from the privacy section of your settings. The wording of the menu changes now and then. It gives you everything at once, in a machine-friendly format, so it works as a backup but not as a quick way to keep a single conversation tidy.

Option 2: copy and paste

Select the messages you want and paste them into a note. It works for short chats. Long chats with code, lists or tables often lose their layout when pasted.

Option 3: Markdown in one click with AIPorter

  1. Open the conversation on claude.ai.
  2. Click the AIPorter icon and open the Export tab.
  3. Choose Copy as Markdown to paste anywhere, or Save as .md file to download the full transcript.

It happens in your browser, and the conversation is not uploaded to AIPorter. The same two buttons work on ChatGPT and Gemini. Signed-out visitors get 1 export a day and a free account 2; Pro has unlimited exports.

Ways to use the saved file

  • Notes: keep one file per project in Notion, Obsidian or a plain folder.
  • New chat, same context: paste the file into a fresh chat. If it is long, ask for a short summary first.
  • Another assistant: see continuing a chat in Gemini or moving a chat to Claude; the steps are the same in reverse.

Try it

AIPorter is a free Chrome extension for ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini. It is independent and not made by OpenAI, Anthropic or Google.
